What's Your Story? How the things you think about yourself could be holding you back.

What's the story you are telling yourself about your life? Are you too old to switch careers? Are you to overweight to date? Do you have trouble making friends? What if these were just stories that you could change today? Shownotes: http://dothedamnthingshow.com/show-notes/ Ready to take action in your life? Let's chat!

Five times a week, I head to my local bootcamp gym for a butt-kicking. It's one of those places that have 5 stations and at each station are two exercises that you alternate between. I love it because it takes all the guesswork out of working out. I show up. They tell me what to do. Easy peasy.

This week, I walked into my bootcamp class and saw that box jumps were on the workout plan. Just a month or two ago, I would have been tempted to turn right around and walk out of the gym. That is how much I hated box jumps. Whenever I would see them on the workout, I would groan and think "I hate box jumps. I can't do them and I hate them!"

Not this week. This week, my first thought was "Yes! I love box jumps!"

What changed?

The story I told myself. I stopped telling myself that I couldn't do a box jump, that I hated box jumps.

Instead I started baby stepping my way toward doing (and loving!) box jumps. A couple of months ago, when box jumps were on the agenda, I stood in front of the box and thought "I can probably do ONE box jump". My brain tried telling me all the reasons I shouldn't attempt it (the main being that I could fall and hit my head and die because my brain loves to be dramatic!). I did that one box jump and then my brain had a new story. "If I could do one box jump, I could probably do another".

And so I did.

With every box jump, I felt more powerful and more badass. I had just watched Captain Marvel and was channeling my inner Carol Danvers. By the end of the session, I had rewritten my story. I went from "I hate box jumps and can't do one" to "I LOVE box jumps! I wonder if I can jump on the higher box next time.."

Our thoughts are just stories we tell ourselves. We might think they are facts and that they are the God's honest truth. But they're not. We created those thoughts and we can just as easily create new ones.

Granted, it won't happen overnight, but it is possible.

What is the story you are telling yourself today that is holding you back? Are you ready to change it?
